INCI name: Persea americana
Description: The avocado tree was first found growing in South American swamp lands. That habitat, plus the shape and color of its fruit, earned it the nickname “alligator pear”. The flesh of the fruit yields up to 30% pure oil. Our avocado is unrefined, virgin (first pressed) oil. It has a deep green color and is very rich in vitamins A and D, lecithin, potassium and chlorophyll (second and third pressed oils will be a light to medium yellowish color with little or no vitamins and minerals).
History / benefits: Avocado was well known by the Aztecs and other native peoples of Central and South America, who used it for a variety of ailments and to protect their skin from hot, dry winds. History states that it was also used on hair to promote its growth. What made avocado most famous is Mexican guacamole, but now this incredible fruit is recognized for its many health benefits. The oil is not suitable for high-heat cooking, but adds a nice flavor to salads.
In skin care, we use avocado oil for its softening and protective properties. The oil is reported to have a natural SPF of 8 – 10. It promotes cell regeneration and is excellent on dry or sun-damaged skin. Avocado is also useful for conditions such as diaper rash and eczema. Undernourished and aged skin will benefit from this unrefined oil.
How to use: Avocado oil can be used as a single-ingredient body moisturizer. Since avocado is a heavy oil, it's not recommended as a single-ingredient facial oil.
